Estimation of Breeding ValueUp-to-date Scientific MethodsGerman pig breeders can react quickly and consistently to new market requirements. They have large breeding populations, systematic performance testing and the latest methods of breeding value estimation. Performance data are recorded at all stages of breeding and production and used for breeding value estimation. Breeding value is assessed by up-to-date methods in close collaboration with scientific institutes. The basis is the socalled animal model (BLUP method). All the performance information available for the animals and its relatives are used for the breeding value estimation. As soon as new information is available, the breeding value is updated. The estimation models differ from one another according to the breeding goals of the various breeding programmes. |
In the breeding farms and in boar performance testing stations, both the life data of the subjects and the performance information of the relatives are used for breeding value estimation. The data used are those on fertility, rearing performance, fattening performance and carcass quality (ultrasonic measurement). The MHS status is checked routinely to ensure resistance to stress. |

Data from progeny and sibling testing are fed into the breeding value estimation by the test stations. These relate to information on fattening performance, carcass value and meat quality. A check on pedigree is made in random samples. Data from the industry (piglet production, pig fattening, abattoir) are incorporated into the breeding value estimation via pig insemination and by selected test farms. These data are the results of progeny testing of A.I. boars with information on fertility, rearing performance, hereditary defects, fattening performance, carcass value as well as other performance traits. |
